How to reach Pisa

Pisa offers several access way.
The International Airport Galileo Galilei is directly connected to several countries in the world to an easy access to and departure from the city.

The two railway stations, Pisa Centrale (the main) and San Rossore, allow to arrive directly inside the city.

Pisa is also near to the A12 and A11 highways and the FI-PI-LI motorway allowing the visitors to access directly to the city or the workshop location if necessary.

How to reach the ISAPP School location

The European Gravitational Observatory (EGO), site of the Virgo interferometer, is located in the countryside of the Comune of Cascina, a few kilometres from town of Pisa.

by plane

To reach EGO from the airport (a drive of about 15 km), the easiest is to hire a taxi (for about 25-30 euros) by calling at +39 050 541600 and ask the driver to be brought to EGO Virgo at Cascina.


by train

Stop at the Central station of Pisa (Pisa Centrale) which is on the railway line connecting Rome and Genoa as well as on the line connecting Leghorn (Livorno) to Florence. Alternatively EGO can be reached by stopping at the railway station of Pontedera, also on the line connecting Leghorn (Livorno) to Florence. From both stations you should hire a taxi to EGO (at Pontedera, it might be useful to remind the driver that EGO is located in the Commune of Cascina, localitÓ "Santo Stefano di Macerata").


by car

Coming from Pisa, follow the road SS206 (also known as "via Emilia"), pass the traffic lights of Arnaccio, and after about 1 km, turn left when you find the indication EGO VIRGO towards Grecciano. Be careful: a straight but very uneven paved road drives you to the EGO site for about 3 km.

Coming from the north with the A12 highway Genova-Livorno, exit at Collesalvetti and follow then the direction towards Pisa. You will reach first, the village of Vicarello and then the National road SS206. After about 2 km, turn right towards a locality named Grecciano on a straight but very uneven paved road. Drive for about 3 km until you find the entrance gate of the EGO-Virgo site.

or

From Florence or Livorno towards Pisa along the express way SGC (known as Fi-Pi-Li, Firenze-Pisa-Livorno): leave the express way at Vicarello-Collesalvetti reaching first, the village of Vicarello, and then the National road SS206. After about 2 km, turn right towards a locality named Grecciano on a straight but very uneven paved road. Drive for about 3 km until you find the entrance gate of the EGO-Virgo site.
